Denise Prince Obituary

Carbondale

Denise Prince, 64, of Carbondale, passed away on February 17, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and fierce devotion to the people and causes closest to her heart.

Born on June 4, 1961, Denise was the beloved daughter of Wilma (Olmstead) and John Hill, who both preceded her in death. The values they instilled in her—compassion, loyalty, and perseverance—became the foundation of her life.

Denise shared 42 wonderful years of marriage with her husband, Mark Prince. Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in love, partnership, and unwavering support for one another. Their joy deepened with the births of their children, Stephanie and Brett, who were the pride and center of Denise’s world. She was a devoted wife and fiercely loving mother whose steady presence shaped her family in countless ways.

Denise had a special gift for caring—whether for people or for animals. On the farm she loved so much, she raised horses and chickens and cherished her dogs, Aura, Gertie, and Porter. She could talk for hours about her animals, sharing stories with enthusiasm and pride. They were not just animals to her; they were part of her family, and she cared for them with the same devotion she gave to everyone she loved.

She was also deeply involved in her community, serving as an active board member of the Herrin Bocce Club and as an avid and passionate bocce player. The friendships she built there and the joy she found on the court were an important part of her life.

In the final years of her life, Denise answered a calling that reflected her truest character. As a volunteer with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), she fiercely advocated for the children assigned to her care. She went above and beyond for “her kids,” ensuring their voices were heard and their needs were met. She fought for them with courage and compassion, leaving a lasting difference in their lives.

Denise is survived by her devoted husband, Mark Prince; her beloved children, Stephanie and Brett; her sister, Lisa Bentz; and several nieces and nephews who will carry her memory forward.

She will be remembered for her loyal heart, her strength, her ability to love deeply, and her unwavering willingness to stand up for those who needed someone in their corner. Her life was one of purpose, passion, and profound love. Her legacy lives on in the family she built, the animals she cherished, and the children whose lives she changed forever.

A celebration of Denise’s life will be held at a future date in May at the place she loved to spend time—the Bocce Courts in Herrin.
