Ernest “Ernie” Ray Burgess, 60, of Herrin, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Graveside services will be held at 12 noon, Monday, March 2, 2026, in Herrin City Cemetery.
Ernie was born on February 14, 1966, in Herrin, to Ina Mae (Howerton) and Norman Earl Burgess.
He is survived by his daughter, Ashley Burgess (Kraig Reinitz); his sons, Daton Burgess and Josh Burgess; his cherished grandchildren, Taylor-Sue Goeke, Samual Goeke, Abigail Goeke, and Kohlbe Reinitz; his brothers, Thomas (Cristinia) Burgess, Paul (Catherine) Burgess, and Fred Burgess; and the mothers of his children, Lisa Barnes-Atterberry and Cookie Allsopp; plus many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Ernie had been a mechanic since the age of 13 and dedicated more than 20 years of service to Vernell’s Interstate Service. He was known for his strong work ethic and his natural talent for working on engines and anything with wheels.
In his free time, Ernie enjoyed racing cars, especially drag racing. He also loved throwing darts, rolling dice, and spending time with family and friends. He will be remembered for his mechanical skill, his competitive spirit, and the love he had for his children and grandchildren.
